More postural support is needed for disabled people than is offered in a normal chair. The majority of users label the seating system the most important component, therefore it must be suitable for the individual.

Cushions for wheelchairs are commonly filled with water, gel, foam, air or a combination of these. A new air cushion was trialed using Urethane foam and air holes, the movement of air within this cushion allows it to change to suit the subject’s body.

Looking at the distribution of pressure across the wheelchair seat, a comparison can be drawn between no cushion, foam cushion and this new air cushion. Although the new cushion brought the subjects nearer to a symmetry index of 0 (equal distribution) and a lower pressure reading overall there was no significant difference to the foam cushion.

This test was with non-wheelchair users and may show improvement if true patients were used.
